The financial markets during the most recent business cycle have been characterized by historical low levels of volatility, thanks to the coordinated easy money policy championed by the global central banks. The arrival of the Covid-19 pandemic, however, rattled market participants and redirected the focus on portfolio volatility. This symposium will feature a lively discussion on the current usage of various alternative investments to control portfolio volatility including volatility futures, exchange traded products, equity and fixed income options contracts and other derivatives. The panel of industry experts will hone in on the following topics:
- What is risk? Permanent loss of capital or near term volatility?
- Why volatility is important for portfolio management.
- Behavioral benefits of hedging and client management.
- Discussion and critique of diversification using equity and fixed income securities.
- Product examples of equity volatility and fixed income volatility management.
- Cost of hedging. Is it worth it?
