The fifth installment of CFA Society Los Angeles' CIO Investment Leadership Series will feature Chief Investment Officers from leading Fixed Income Managers to discuss how they are turning disruption into opportunity to provide for their constituents. These expert investors will discuss a range of topics including:

- What are the biggest risks in public and private fixed income markets?
- How are you utilizing private credit to diversify your portfolios?
- What are the most attractive emerging (or niche) credit strategies that institutions should consider?

- Discuss the importance of diversity, social responsibility, or other ESG factors as it relates to generating superior performance?
MODERATOR
Zack Ellison, CFA | Zack Ellison is the Managing General Partner and Chief Investment Officer of Applied Real Intelligence (“A.R.I.”). A.R.I. is a Los Angeles-based venture debt investment manager focused on providing financing solutions to innovative, high-growth, VC-backed companies in recession-resistant sectors and underserved regions in North America. Mr. Ellison leads A.R.I.’s investment activities, including sourcing, due diligence, structuring, execution, and portfolio management.
Previously, Mr. Ellison was Director, U.S. Fixed Income at Sun Life Financial, where he was responsible for corporate credit investing. Prior to Sun Life Financial, he was a corporate bond and credit default swap trader at Deutsche Bank. During the Global Financial Crisis, he was a banker focused on leveraged loans within the media and telecom sectors at Scotiabank.
Mr. Ellison holds an MBA from The University of Chicago Booth School of Business and an MS in Risk Management from New York University’s Stern School of Business. He has earned the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) and Chartered Alternative Investment Analyst (CAIA) designations and currently serves as a Board Member of CFA Society Los Angeles and the Southern California Chapter of the CAIA Association. PANELISTS
Luc de la Durantaye, CFA | Luc de la Durantaye serves as the Chief Investment Officer of the Multi Asset and Currency team where he oversees the multi asset investment process and manages CIBC AM’s currency process. Mr. de la Durantaye also chairs the firm’s Investment Committee and helps to coordinate the investment views and processes developed by other team leaders within his unit. He is the primary spokesperson for CIBC AM’s investment insights.
Mr. de la Durantaye joined CIBC AM in 2002 and has over three decades of investment experience. In a previous role, he was responsible for tactical asset allocation and currency management at a large Canadian financial institution. He began his career in 1985 as a financial analyst at a sell side brokerage firm.
Mr. de la Durantaye holds a Bachelor of International Finance from École des Hautes Études Commerciales of Montreal. He is also a CFA charterholder and a member of the CFA Society of Montreal. Back To Top ^^
Brett Hickey | Brett Hickey has over 20 years of private investing and investment banking experience with over 15 years spent directly in the U.S. lower middle-market. He has completed over 125 private equity, private credit and secondary fund investments.
Mr. Hickey is the Founder & CEO of Star Mountain Capital, LLC, a multi-billion dollar specialized private investment firm. Star Mountain employs a data-driven approach to provide value-added debt and equity capital to established small and medium-sized private companies leveraging its scale-driven resources and longstanding relationships. Star Mountain also has a secondary fund investment business providing early liquidity for investors in lower middle-market private credit and private equity funds.
Previously, Mr. Hickey worked as an Investment Banker at Citigroup Global Markets in New York City (formerly known as Salomon Smith Barney) where he worked with global investment managers and financial institutions, helping them evaluate strategic and portfolio investments. In that role he worked on over $24 billion in completed debt and equity transactions as well as mergers and acquisitions.
He graduated with Distinction from McGill University in Montreal, Canada with a Bachelor of Commerce degree in Finance and Accounting. He is an alumnus of Harvard Business School’s Owner, President / Manager executive training and management program. Back To Top ^^
