This participatory survey course is designed to provide an introductory exposure to financial analysis for individuals who have not been previously exposed to accounting, finance or economics. The course traces the full development of a company from birth to maturity and in the process surveys a wide variety of issues including going public, securities markets, bonds, convertible securities, preferred stock, company asset questions, cash flows and more. The balance sheet, income statement and cash flow financial statements receive thorough review and analysis. Such key methods and concepts as ratio analysis, earnings per share calculations and forecasts, P/E ratio calculations, and numerous other valuable tools are practice taught. Additionally, important topics such as the role of the S.E.C., relationships between financial institutions, and a discussion of both sell and buy side firms are covered. Class discussion and participation on numerous in-class exercises are required, therefore punctual attendance is essential.
